During the Annual Regional Convention of the Private Secondary School Administrators Association of the Philippines (PRISSAAP) Region 3 in Tagaytay last October, Department of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus identified principals as the “principal ingredient for meaningful change.”

He also presented plans for the training of teachers and administrators and stressed the need to empower principals as effectors of positive change in the educational system.

Shortly after the PRISSAAP convention, another organization of principals, the Philippine Association of Secondary Administrators or PASSA held the National Secondary School Administrators Congress in Baguio City. On its twenty-sixth year, the Congress took on the theme “The Principal Leading the Way in Empowering Communities.” Secretary Lapus was once again the keynote speaker, tackling the Basic Education Reform Agenda for Philippine Communities.

Quick to respond to the call for educational development, AHEAD Professional Network, a private training company that started as a review center for college admission tests in the 1990’s, will conduct a seminar-workshop on school administration, finance management, and school leadership on Nov. 24 and 25 at the Ateneo Institute of Social Order in Quezon City. Registration is facilitated through AHEAD’s branches in Katipunan, Greenhills, SM Megamall, Robinsons Galleria, and Dagupan. Interested parties may also call 426-0034 to 36, 396-1999, or 0917-5011190.

To conduct the seminar are Professor Sonny Coloma and Mrs. Lilia Vengco. Coloma teaches business management courses at top institutions and served as undersecretary for both the DOTC and DAR during the Aquino administration. Vengco is a seasoned school administrator and teacher trainer of the De La Salle University System.

The seminar is part of a series of training programs for school heads entitled “Leadership Strategies for School Managers” (LESSM). The first module in the series was conducted last July and August at La Salle Green Hills and Ateneo de Manila University. Over 200 principals from various public and private schools attended the LESSM. Participants came from as far as Quezon Province, Dagupan, Laoag, and Cebu. A few weeks after the seminars, AHEADPro was commissioned by DepEd to train public school principals on school management, leadership, and English proficiency.AHEADPro has also devised a complete training program for teachers. Curriculum development, learning management, teaching strategies, and test construction are only a few of the topics covered by its training modules. Teacher seminars are scheduled for the coming summer. Trainers from the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University will conduct lectures and workshop activities to help teachers gain confidence in their teaching skills. Information on the programs is available on www.pro.aheadph.com.

Rossana Llenado, founder of AHEADPro, believes it’s about time to give Philippine education full attention. “With many of the good teachers going abroad, our children might be left with so-so teachers. We can’t let this happen. We have to make sure there are trained, dedicated teachers and principals who will stay in the country for future generations of Filipinos.”
